Hello again!
So this fellow was one of my highlights of End of the Road festival last year, which as you can imagine, had a lot of highlights! Dan Mangan played the mainstage on a beautiful sunny day with just a string section, for the first time ever. Ballsy. He was utterly fantastic that day and I'm chuffed to bring him to Brighton in the intimate confines of The Hope.
Once a mere fresh faced folk singer from Vancouver, Canada, Dan Mangan now stands at the world’s doorstep. He has toured the US with The Walkmen, Decemberists and Okkervil River and played Glastonbury twice.
The 2010 Polaris Music Prize short list nomination for his sophomore album Nice, Nice Very Nice capped a stellar year in which Dan won iTunes Album of the Year in the singer songwriter category, a trio of CBC awards and was named XM The Verge Artist of the Year.
His new album 'Oh Fortune' was produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Cave Singers) and is a far more ambitious offering than its predecessor. A rich, textured, indie-folk(ish) statement that explores the genre’s boundaries with great influence from his band, which pushed Dan beyond his comfort zone sonically, even as he dug deeper within himself.
His band now includes free-jazz experimentalists Gord Grdina (guitar), Kenton Loewen (drums) and the inimitable John Walsh (bass), as well as a near orchestra that helped shape the production. There was also a ringer call to Seattle’s Eyvind Kang (Bill Frisell, Beck, Mike Patton, Marc Ribot) who helped write the lush arrangements on Oh Fortune.
So yeah, did you notice the seamless transition between my tinpot English and the PR speel there? Thought not. Either way, I'm really looking forward to this show. It will happen on Friday 27th April, with support from Zeus and The Line of Best Fit's Oh! Canada DJs. Tickets can be purchased here as well as the usual ticket outlets; Resident Music, Rounder Records and Ape.
Here's a video. I hope his beard is this well grommed in real life, or there'll be trouble.
Right, that's that. Remember that we have our first show of 2012 tomorrow night. It's at the Hope and features Woman's Hour, The Vaudeville and Two Jackals. More info on that can be found here: http://love-thy-neighbour.blogspot.com/2012/01/first-show-of-2012.html
cheers!

First show of 2012
Hiya!
Happy New Year.
The first Love Thy Neighbour show of 2012 is happening on Friday 13th January at the Hope. As we did last year, every second Friday is completely ours from 9pm, with Love Thy Neighbour & occasional guest DJs downstairs and some awesome bands upstairs. A week today hotly tipped London via Kendal types Woman's Hour will be joined onstage by The Vaudeville and Two Jackals. As everyone is broke in January, it is only £3 in advance and £4 on the door. BARGAIN!
Woman's Hour released their debut single at the end of last year and sound like the midpoint between the XX and Vampire Weekend. They've been bigged up in all the right places for such a new band; Loud & Quiet, Vice, some random french blog and This Is Fake DIY. You can watch a nice little video here; http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/articles/tv/womans-hour
In other news, we've added experimental folk act Foxpockets and Milk & Biscuits (who feature members of Electric Soft Parade & Restlesslist in their number) to the Nat Baldwin show at The Hope on Monday 30th January. We've also added My Sad Captains and Us Baby Bear Bones to the Still Corners show on 10th February.
Tickets for these shows and all our others, can be found at Resident (01273 606312), Rounder (01273 325440), Ape, Seetickets.com and wegottickets.com
Thanks for your support in 2011, I hope our shows in 2012 keep you entertained!
cheers,
Andy
